🍁 Autumn Routes in Georgia: Seven Ready-Made Trips from One to Four Days
🍁 Seven routes, and how to pick yours
This selection answers not "when to go" but "how to put it together". Seven ready-made routes from one to four days, with logistics, overnight stops and clear limits on dates.

In autumn almost everything in Georgia works, which creates the opposite problem: it is hard to know where to start. So what follows is not a list of places but seven ready-made trips with days, distances and overnight stops.
Four can be slotted into any week of the season; three are tied to dates. That is where we begin.
🍇 Route 1. Kakheti for the harvest, 2-3 days

The country's principal autumn route and the only one worth arranging your dates around.
Logistics. Tbilisi to Telavi is about two hours over the Gombori pass. After that everything in the region is within an hour. A car makes life much easier: the wineries are scattered and marshrutkas between villages are infrequent.
Day one: Telavi. Batonis Tsikhe fortress, the famous plane tree, and the view over the Alazani valley with the Caucasus on the horizon. The town is covered in Telavi, and where to eat in where to eat in Telavi.
Day two: wineries and Kvareli. Tastings, and joining the picking if you arranged it in advance. Nearby is Kvareli Lake, a good place to break up the wine programme.
Day three: Sighnaghi. A hill town above the valley, with the range visible on a clear day. Covered in Sighnaghi, the town of love. From there it is about two hours back to Tbilisi.
What to book. Rooms in Telavi and Sighnaghi go weeks ahead in September: rtveli is the local high season. Joining the picking is arranged directly with the estate, and a week either way decides whether you see the pressing or the tanks already washed out.
Which estates to visit is in the ranking of Kakheti wineries, and where to sleep in where to stay in Kakheti. The harvest festival itself has its own piece, rtveli.
⛰️ Route 2. Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road, 1-2 days

The most dependable route of the autumn: this is a trunk road, it gets cleared, and it works all season.
Logistics. Tbilisi to Stepantsminda is about three hours on the Georgian Military Road. Marshrutkas run from Didube station, but with a car you can stop along the way, and half the point is in the stops.
On the way up. Ananuri Fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, an obligatory halt roughly halfway. Then Pasanauri, where the White and Black Aragvi meet and the difference in the water's colour is visible from the bridge.
At the top. The climb to Gergeti Trinity Church: about an hour and a half on foot, fifteen minutes by four-wheel drive. The walk is easier in autumn than in summer, and on a clear day the view of Kazbek is sharper once the summer haze has gone.
One day or two. In one you can drive up, climb to the church and return, but it will be a marathon. The two-day version with a night in Stepantsminda leaves room for the Gveleti waterfall and the Dariali gorge.
The drive is covered in the Georgian Military Road and Kazbegi, and accommodation in where to stay in Kazbegi.
🏔️ Route 3. Svaneti: Mestia and Ushguli, 3-4 days

The longest route here and the most spectacular. Reliable to about mid-October.
Logistics. Mestia is a day's travel from Tbilisi, around eight hours. Three options: the overnight train to Zugdidi then a marshrutka, a direct flight from Tbilisi or Kutaisi on a small aircraft, or driving. The flight saves a day but depends on the weather and is cancelled more often than you would like.
Day one: the journey and Mestia. Arrival, the Svan towers, the museum of history and ethnography.
Day two: Ushguli. About two hours from Mestia on an unpaved road. One of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe, covered in Ushguli.
Day three: walking. The Mestiachala valley or the climb to the Koruldi lakes. The trails are dry in autumn and the slopes turn by the end of September.
On the way back, if you are driving via Kutaisi, allow half a day for the Martvili canyon or the Okatse canyon. Both are on the route and both are quiet in autumn.
The constraint. The Ushguli road is unpaved and washes out after rain. Check the forecast before you set off. The wider region is covered in Svaneti, and accommodation in where to stay in Mestia.
🥾 Route 4. Tusheti: through September only

Georgia's most inaccessible region and the only route here with a hard deadline.
On the dates, plainly. The Abano pass at 2,950 m is officially open from mid-May to the end of October. But snow can settle there in late September or in the last third of October, and no fixed closing date exists. September is therefore the last month with predictable weather, and October is a gamble. Do not plan an October trip with no margin.
Logistics. The road starts at the village of Pshaveli in the Telavi district. Four-wheel drive only, usually a booked transfer: local drivers know the road, and you almost certainly do not. In 2013 the BBC listed it among Europe's most extreme roads, and that is not marketing copy.
On the ground. The base is the village of Omalo with its Keselo fortress. Beyond that, walking routes between villages. What to see is collected in Tusheti, and a ready-made loop is described in from Omalo to Omalo.
The non-negotiable rule. Plan the drive back with a spare day: traffic over the pass is stopped when the forecast turns, and you simply will not leave.

🌊 Route 5. Adjara: sea and waterfalls, 2-3 days

The only coastal route here, and it calls for honesty.
On the weather. September and October are the two wettest months of the year in Adjara, roughly equal at about 250 mm each. Different weather services give the title to one or the other. So put this route in September, and even then with a rain plan.
Day one: Batumi and the southern coast. The sea runs around 25°C in September. Further south are Gonio with its Roman-era fortress and Kvariati, where the pebbles are larger and the water clearer.
Day two: upland Adjara. The Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar's arched bridge beside it, about an hour from Batumi. The falls run fuller in autumn than in summer.
Day three, if you have it. The Batumi Botanical Garden, at its best of the year in September and October, and exactly the fallback for a wet day.
The constraint. The roads in upland Adjara are narrow and winding, and after rain some unpaved stretches turn to mud. If the forecast is poor, swap day two with day three.
What else the coast offers is in the guide to the resorts of Adjara.
♨️ Route 6. Spa weekend: Borjomi and Tskaltubo, 2 days

The most underrated autumn route and the second most dependable after Kazbegi: it does not depend on road status at all.
Logistics. Tbilisi to Borjomi is about two and a half hours, then another two to Tskaltubo via Khashuri. The loop closes neatly through Kutaisi.
Day one: Borjomi. The park in the Borjomula gorge, the mineral springs, the cable car. In autumn it holds around fifteen degrees with the forest turning; in summer it is muggy and busy. The town is covered in Borjomi, the mineral water resort. With half a day to spare there is Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park next door, where the lower trails are still open in October.
Day two: Tskaltubo. Radon baths, working sanatoriums and the abandoned Soviet blocks, which in autumn look as they do in no other season. The town has its own piece, the quiet town of Tskaltubo, and accommodation is in where to stay in Tskaltubo.
What to book. Autumn is high season for the spa towns: sanatoriums with treatment programmes go early.
A note on wording. Mineral waters and radon baths are used in a wellness format, but with chronic conditions it is better to consult a doctor before starting a course.
🏜️ Route 7. Steppe: Vashlovani and David Gareja, 1-2 days

Autumn is the only comfortable season for the semi-desert, and that is the whole point of the route.
Why now. Summer temperatures here pass forty degrees, there is no shade, and the trip becomes an ordeal. October is pleasant by day, and the landscapes look their best.
David Gareja, a day trip from Tbilisi, about two hours each way. A cave monastery complex in the middle of the Gareja semi-desert.
Vashlovani National Park, in the south-east of Kakheti on the Azerbaijani border. Canyons, mud volcanoes and open pistachio woodland. It needs a full day at minimum, better two with an overnight stay.
The non-negotiable. Higher clearance and dry weather: the dirt roads turn to mud after rain, and in Vashlovani that is not a figure of speech. A jeep tour with a local driver is the sensible option over trying it alone.
How to combine. Both sit in the east of the country, so they pair naturally with the Kakheti route: Gareja on the way out or back.
🚗 Logistics: getting around
A car gives the most freedom, but it is not essential for every route, and on two of them they simply will not let you drive yourself. Below are four ways of moving and what each is good for.
📅 Fitting a route around the festivals

Autumn is Georgia's busiest season for events, and the routes can be built around dates.
Rtveli runs in Kakheti from late August through September, peaking in the second half. Route one belongs in exactly those weeks.
Tbilisoba falls on the first weekend of October, which in 2026 is the 3rd and 4th. It works well as an assembly point: arrive in the capital for the festival and go out on any of the routes before or after.
Mtskhetoba-Svetitskhovloba on 14 October is a public holiday. Ten days separate it from Tbilisoba, and the spa weekend or Kakheti slots neatly into that gap.
The full calendar with dates is in autumn 2026 holidays and events.
Do not glue more than two routes into one trip. The temptation is real, because almost everything works in autumn, but the transfers will eat half your time.
The pairs that work. Kakheti with the steppe: both in the east, a couple of hours apart. The spa weekend with Svaneti: Tskaltubo sits on the road west. Kazbegi pairs with anything, since it is only a day. Adjara and Tusheti pair with nothing: they are at opposite ends of the country and each needs its own run.

Information is current as of September 2026. The status of mountain roads changes through the autumn and the timing of the harvest shifts each year. Check the forecast and the state of the passes before setting out for Tusheti, Svaneti or upland Adjara.
❓ FAQ
💬 Kakheti for the harvest: it is the only month when you can catch the picking, and the peak falls in the second half of September. September is also the last dependable month for Tusheti and a good time for Svaneti and the Adjara coast.
💬 To the spa towns, Borjomi and Tskaltubo, and to the Vashlovani and Gareja steppe: both are uncomfortable in summer and at their best in October. Kazbegi is open all month, Svaneti reliably to mid-month, while the sea and Tusheti are already closing.
💬 In Svaneti and along the Georgian Military Road, roughly from mid-September to mid-October. The Borjomi gorge turns a little later and holds it longer, while in Kakheti the autumn colour comes from the vineyards rather than the forest.
💬 In September, yes: the water is around 25°C and swimming is comfortable all month. In October only the first ten days, with water around 20-21°C and air around 20°C. Bear in mind that September and October are the two wettest months of the year in Adjara.
💬 The Abano pass at 2,950 m is officially open to the end of October, but snow can settle there as early as late September and no fixed closing date exists. September is the last month with predictable weather; October is a gamble. Plan the drive back with a spare day.
💬 For Kakheti, Adjara, the spa weekend and the steppe it is effectively essential. Kazbegi and Svaneti work by marshrutka, train and plane. Tusheti needs four-wheel drive, and people usually take a transfer with a local driver.
💬 Two, no more. Kakheti and the steppe pair well, as do the spa weekend and Svaneti. Kazbegi can be added to anything since it is only a day. Do not pair Adjara with Tusheti or with anything else: they sit at opposite ends of the country.
💬 Rain most often wrecks plans in Adjara and in the mountains. The spa weekend and Kakheti barely depend on the weather, and the Batumi Botanical Garden and the museums of Kutaisi are ready-made fallbacks on the coast.
💬 Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road: one day, a trunk road, reachable without a car, and open all autumn. The spa weekend is next in simplicity, since it too is independent of road conditions.
