💧 Makhuntseti Waterfall and Queen Tamar Bridge: What to See in Mountainous Adjara

If you are based in Batumi and want to see real mountainous Adjara in half a day, Makhuntseti Waterfall is the easiest option. It is under an hour away by minibus, entry is free, and right beside it stands a stone bridge that is more than eight centuries old. Below we cover how to get there without a car, when the water looks best, whether you can swim, and what else is worth seeing nearby.
💧 Where Makhuntseti Waterfall Is and What It Looks Like
The waterfall sits by Makhuntseti village in the Keda municipality, about 30 km from Batumi, on the Acharistskali river. It is just a couple of minutes from the Batumi to Keda road, so you can hear it before you see it. The water drops through a narrow rocky gorge into a pool below, and the spray keeps the air noticeably cooler even in July.

The height is a moving target. Some guides say 20 metres, the regional Visit Ajara portal lists 36, a few sources claim 48, and proud locals will happily round it up past fifty. The real figure is probably closer to 30 metres. So if you are chasing a record drop, this is not it, but for sheer accessibility Makhuntseti is firmly the most popular waterfall in Adjara.
The greenery around it is dense, and in summer the falls look almost hidden in the forest. Spring is when it runs fullest and loudest, while summer leaves it thinner and calmer. If you prefer waterfalls that are wilder and harder to reach, Mount Mtirala with its rainforest is nearby, but Makhuntseti's strength is that anyone can get there.
🚌 How to Get to Makhuntseti Waterfall From Batumi

There is no direct transport to the waterfall itself, but that is not a problem. From the Old Bus Station in Batumi (Mayakovsky Street), minibuses run toward Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo, and any of them passes Makhuntseti. Hop on one, tell the driver you are getting off at Makhuntseti village, and a minute from the stop you will be at the water. Minibuses leave roughly once an hour, and the ride takes about an hour.
If you would rather skip the wait, take a taxi or rent a car: the road is paved and easy, with room to turn and park. Many travellers combine Makhuntseti with other points in the region as part of a mountainous Adjara day trip. We have a detailed plan for a one day route from Batumi with waterfalls and viewpoints.
The waterfall is thirty kilometres from Batumi on the road into mountainous Adjara: the minibus passes by, but you can wait an hour for one back.

🏛️ The Queen Tamar Bridge Next to the Waterfall

A few hundred metres from the waterfall, a stone arched bridge crosses the Acharistskali river. It is a single arch roughly 29 metres long and about 2.5 metres wide, standing some six metres above the water. You can still walk across it, which makes it a rare case of a medieval structure working much as it did eight centuries ago.
The name comes with a charming confusion. The bridge is dated to the golden age of Georgia, the late 12th and early 13th century, when Queen Tamar ruled the country. But there are more than two dozen so-called Tamar bridges in Adjara alone, and crediting them all to one ruler misses the point: the name became a marker of the era rather than a builder's signature. The stone and the arch, however, are entirely real. If old Adjarian trails interest you, the Kintrishi valley with its old-growth forest is not far away.
🏊 Can You Swim at Makhuntseti Waterfall
You can swim, with a seasonal caveat. Below the waterfall and under the bridge the river forms a pool and small pebbly beaches, and in summer, when the Acharistskali drops, visitors happily get in. The water is cold and bracing even in the heat, so do not expect a long swim, but a dip to cool off is realistic.
Spring is a different story: the river swells and the current strengthens, and at that time rafting on Adjara's mountain rivers is more popular than swimming. If you are travelling with children, stick to the shallow pools near the bank and keep away from the falls themselves, where the rocks are slippery.

🗓️ The Best Time to Visit Makhuntseti Waterfall
The season runs roughly from May to October, and each month has its own logic. May and early June bring the strongest flow and fresh greenery, with the water still high from snowmelt. July and August are warm and good for swimming, though the stream is thinner in dry weeks. September and October offer mild weather and fewer people.
Winter visits are possible and quietly beautiful, but mountain roads are less predictable and the facilities at the entrance shrink to a minimum. The best time of day is the morning: tour groups tend to arrive around midday, so an early start gives you photos without the crowd.
🗺️ What to See Near Makhuntseti in One Day
People rarely visit Makhuntseti on its own, and rightly so: there are enough points around to fill a whole day. The most logical neighbour is Mirveti Waterfall, smaller in height but cascading and photogenic. On the way it is worth stopping at the confluence of the Chorokhi and Acharistskali rivers, where two differently coloured waters refuse to mix for a stretch. Fans of ruins and views will like Gvara Fortress above the junction of three gorges.

If you want to go deeper into the mountains, Machakhela National Park with its old-growth forest and suspension bridges is an easy extension. On the way back many travellers stop at the Adjarian Wine House for a tasting. There is also an ethnographic museum in Kveda Makhuntseti in the next village, which shows the daily life and traditions of the highlanders, a good way to understand the region rather than just drive through it.
Half a day worth taking

Makhuntseti is neither the tallest nor the wildest waterfall in Georgia, and oddly enough that is its strength. You can reach it on an ordinary minibus, stop by an eight-hundred-year-old bridge, dip into cold mountain water and be back in Batumi by lunch. One trip gives you nature, history and that Adjarian flavour that makes leaving the city worthwhile. As a single, low-effort escape into the mountains for a first taste of the region, it is a strong pick.
