🍂 A Trip to Georgia in October: Weather, Where to Go and What to See
🍂 October in Georgia: a month of deadlines and openings
The beach season survives the first ten days and mountain roads begin to close. In exchange, everything that was unbearable in summer opens up: the spa towns, the Kakheti steppe, and the cities themselves, where you can finally walk all day.

October in Georgia is the second half of the shoulder season. Daytime Tbilisi runs around 19-22°C, the mountains turn gold, Kakheti finishes the grape harvest, and two of the country's main autumn festivals fall in the first half of the month.
But October has a quality September does not: it splits the country into what still works and what no longer does. That is where we will start.
⏳ What closes and what opens
If you are planning an October trip, read this list first and choose the region afterwards.
The sea holds until roughly the middle of the first ten days. Water around 20-21°C, air in Batumi around 20°C by day and 13°C at night. Technically you can swim; in practice it is for the committed.
Tusheti is uncertain from the first days of the month. The Abano pass is officially open to the end of October, but snow at 2,950 m can arrive at any moment, and there is no fixed date.
Svaneti works reliably to about mid-month, after which it depends on the weather.
Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road stay open all October: it is a trunk road and it gets cleared.

Now for what is at its best in October.
Spa towns. Borjomi and Tskaltubo are muggy in summer; in October they get exactly the weather they were built for.
Steppe and semi-desert. Vashlovani and David Gareja bake in summer and come into their own in October.
Cities. Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kutaisi are comfortable end to end, with no caveats about midday sun.
🌤️ Weather in October by region
The spread is wider than in September: the gap between the coast and the high mountains reaches fifteen degrees.
Tbilisi. Around 19-22°C by day, sunny, with cold evenings. The best month of the year for long walks in the city: no heat, little rain, and daylight hours still decent.

Adjara and the coast. Around 20°C by day, about 13°C at night. Here is the honest caveat: September and October are the two wettest months of the year in Adjara, roughly equal at about 250 mm each. Different weather services give the title to one or the other, and the difference sits within the margin of error. In practice this means an umbrella and a windproof are essential and planning around the forecast is futile. Beyond Batumi the region has other bases, collected in the guide to the resorts of Adjara.
Kakheti. Dry and comfortable, around 20°C by day. The wine season continues, but without September's rush. The wider picture is in Kakheti as a wine region.
The mountains. Pleasant for walking by day, frost at night. The gold on the slopes falls roughly in the first half of the month; after that the leaves come down. Kazbegi belongs to Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Svaneti to Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti.
Month-by-month figures for the capital are in average temperatures in Tbilisi by month.
🌊 The sea: catch the first ten days

The water sits around 20-21°C at the start of October and cools noticeably by mid-month. Air in Batumi runs around 20°C by day.
Technically that is still swimming; in practice it is a five-minute dip rather than a beach day. The sea breeze makes twenty degrees feel considerably cooler.
If you are going to the coast in October, do not go for the sea. Batumi is good for other reasons then: an empty promenade, restaurants working without queues, prices half what they were in August. The Batumi Botanical Garden is at its best of the year, and in the cool you can walk up to the top station of the Argo cable car rather than ride it.
Next along the coast is Kobuleti, quieter still and cheaper, described in our piece on the town of Kobuleti.
What the coast is like a month earlier is covered in a September trip to Georgia, and the season itself in the velvet season.
🎉 October's festivals

October is autumn's busiest month for events, and both major festivals fall in its first half.
Tbilisoba, the capital's city day, takes place on the first weekend of the month. It is a fair with grapes pressed in the street, craft rows, concerts and tastings of the new wine. Dates, venues, programme and the festival's history are covered separately in the national festival of Tbilisoba.
Mtskhetoba-Svetitskhovloba, 14 October. The patronal feast in Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, and an official public holiday. It is associated with the Robe of Christ, which by tradition rests beneath Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
For a visitor this is a rare chance to see Mtskheta not as a tourist site but as a working centre of pilgrimage. Crowds are heavy, so allow extra time for the journey.
The grape harvest continues in October, but only in the late and mountain districts of Kakheti. The lowlands have gone quiet, which for tastings is an advantage. The festival itself has its own piece, rtveli.
♨️ The spa route: Borjomi and Tskaltubo
This is the direction that makes October worth choosing. In summer the mineral-water towns are muggy and busy; in October they get exactly the weather they were designed around.

Borjomi in October is above all a park. Walking the Borjomula gorge as the forest turns and the air holds around fifteen degrees beats doing it in July's thirty. The mineral springs operate year-round, but the walking half of the town is at its best now. The town is covered in detail in Borjomi, the mineral water resort.
Next door is Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. The lower trails are open in October; the high-altitude ones close from around the end of the month.

Tskaltubo is a different kind of story. The radon baths run out of season, but the town itself, with its abandoned Soviet sanatoriums, looks in October the way it does in no other month: empty colonnades, fallen leaves, silence. Photographers love it. The town has its own piece, the quiet town of Tskaltubo, and accommodation is collected in where to stay in Tskaltubo.
The two combine easily: about two hours apart via Khashuri. Kutaisi sits close to Tskaltubo, so the route closes naturally through it.
A note on wording. Mineral waters and radon baths are used in a wellness format, but with chronic conditions it is better to consult a doctor before starting a course.
🏜️ Steppe and semi-desert: October is the season
The second direction that is simply out of reach in summer.

Vashlovani National Park in the south-east of Kakheti, on the Azerbaijani border. Semi-desert landscapes, canyons, mud volcanoes and open pistachio woodland. Summer temperatures pass forty degrees and make the trip pointless; October is comfortable.
David Gareja and the surrounding Gareja semi-desert follow the same logic. Open sun, no shade and the climb to the caves are punishing in summer and turn into a pleasant walk in October.
Both need a car and dry weather: the dirt roads turn to mud after rain.
🏙️ Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti
Three destinations that work in October without a single caveat.
Tbilisi in October is arguably the city's best month. The autumn capital is covered separately in autumn Tbilisi: the courtyards of Sololaki, the plane trees on the avenue, and the sulphur baths, which in cool weather finally make sense. The climb to Narikala is easy in October, and Abanotubani is doing what it was built for.
Mtskheta is half an hour from the capital. Beyond the 14 October feast there is Svetitskhoveli, Jvari, and the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi, which looks particularly good in autumn.
Kakheti is quieter in October than in September. The lowland harvest is over, there are fewer visitors, and the wineries have time for you. Telavi and Sighnaghi are free of queues, which is rare in September. Which estates to visit is in the ranking of Kakheti wineries, and what to see between tastings in things to see in Kakheti.
⛰️ The mountains: what is still open

Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road are open the whole of October. It is a trunk road and it gets cleared, and Stepantsminda operates year-round. The climb to Gergeti Trinity Church is good in October: no heat, and on a clear day the view of Kazbek is sharper than in summer. The drive is described in the Georgian Military Road and Tbilisi to Kazbegi.
Svaneti works reliably to about mid-month. Mestia and Ushguli are reachable, but check the forecast before setting out: the Ushguli road is unpaved. For an overview see Svaneti: mountains, towers, glaciers.
Tusheti is uncertain. The Abano pass at 2,950 m is officially open to the end of October, but snow can arrive at any moment and there is no fixed date. If you go anyway, plan the drive back with a spare day: traffic over the pass is stopped when the forecast turns. What to see once there is in Tusheti, a region of reserves.
Routes across the country are gathered in hiking in Georgia.
💰 Prices: the low season begins
October is the point where the coast moves definitively into the low season.
Accommodation in Batumi and along the Adjara coast drops noticeably, and the gap with August is real. Prices in mountain villages fall too, except over the first weekend, when the capital fills up for city day.
Food and transport, as always in Georgia, carry no seasonal markup.
Flights in October are usually cheaper than in summer: demand falls while the summer schedule is still running.
One exception. The spa towns run the other way: October is their high season, and Tskaltubo and Borjomi should be booked ahead, particularly sanatoriums with treatment programmes.
🎒 What to pack

The October kit differs from the September one in a single respect: warm layers are needed beyond the evening.
A jacket is essential for every destination. For Adjara bring a rain jacket or waterproof shell: an umbrella works poorly there because of the wind.
For the mountains, warm clothing in earnest: night frosts rather than the five degrees of September.
For the Vashlovani and Gareja steppe, the opposite: light clothing and sun protection, since daytime is still hot.
The general packing list is in ten things to bring to Georgia.
🗓️ October or September

The difference between the two months comes down to a single choice.
September is the all-rounder. Everything works at once: the sea, the mountains, the harvest, the cities. But there are more people and prices are higher.
October forces a choice. The sea has effectively closed and some mountain roads become uncertain. In exchange you get the spa towns, the steppe, two city festivals, gold in the mountains and low-season prices.
If this is your first and only trip, take September. If you have already been in summer, or you are coming for the spa towns and the cities, October is the more interesting month.
The previous month is covered in a September trip to Georgia, and the full year in when to visit Georgia.
October is easiest to build around one of two dates. Either you arrive for the first weekend and the city day, or for 14 October and the feast at Mtskheta, and construct the rest of the week around it.
A plan that works. Two days in the capital, then three on the spa route: Borjomi, a night there, Tskaltubo, back via Kutaisi. The sea does not feature at all, and that is correct: in October it is no longer an argument.
Been to Georgia in October? Leave a review on Madloba: tell us which dates you travelled, whether the Tusheti road was open, and whether the coast is worth it at that time of year.
Information is current as of September 2026. Municipalities confirm the dates of city festivals, the status of mountain roads changes through the month, and the climate figures are long-term averages rather than a forecast. Check current conditions before you travel.
❓ Frequently asked questions
