⚔️ Battle of Kakheti's Premium Resorts: Kvareli Lake Resort vs Radisson Collection
The Alazani Valley is the heart of Georgian winemaking and one of the most scenic places in the country. Vineyards stretch here from horizon to horizon, the wall of the Greater Caucasus rises above them, and the main wine towns of Kakheti line both sides of the valley. This is where the region's two most famous premium resorts operate: Kvareli Lake Resort on a lakeshore at the foot of the Caucasus range and Tsinandali Estate, A Radisson Collection Hotel in the historic estate of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze. Only 45-50 kilometers separate them, yet in spirit these are two completely different holidays.
Our experts have personally stayed at both hotels and wrote a detailed, honest piece about each: the review of Kvareli Lake Resort and the review of Tsinandali Estate, A Radisson Collection. In this article we bring the impressions together: we compare locations, rooms, pools, food and service, show the route on an interactive map, and help you decide which of the two resorts is right for you.
🏨 Meet the contenders: two flagships of the Alazani Valley
Kvareli Lake Resort stands on the shore of the Chala reservoir on the northern side of the valley, right at the foot of the Greater Caucasus. It is a resort in the purest sense: enclosed green grounds with no cars, two buildings (a Georgian one with traditional motifs and a European one with modern interiors), catamarans, fishing, and a panorama of the Alazani Valley from the windows. The nearest major town is Telavi, about an hour away.
Tsinandali Estate, A Radisson Collection Hotel occupies the opposite, southern edge of the valley at the foot of the Tsiv-Gombori Range. The hotel was built in the middle of a historic 18-hectare park, next to the house museum of Alexander Chavchavadze, and bets on history, wine and infrastructure: 141 rooms, a rooftop pool overlooking the Caucasus, tennis and padel courts, a spa and an open-air amphitheater.
A fun detail: both resorts are tied to the Chavchavadze name. Tsinandali was home to Alexander, a poet, winemaker and the founder of Georgian Romanticism, while Kvareli is the birthplace of the writer and public figure Ilia, honored by the Ilia Chavchavadze State Museum. So there is a cultural program on both sides of the valley.
🗺️ Where the hotels are and how to get there
Both resorts are in Kakheti, and the easiest way to reach them from Tbilisi is by car. Tsinandali is about 90 kilometers and 1.5-2 hours away via the Gombori Pass, Kvareli is around 130 kilometers and 2-2.5 hours. The distance between the hotels themselves is 45-50 kilometers: the road runs through Telavi or along the northern side of the valley past the Gremi fortress and takes about an hour. A detailed breakdown of every way to reach the region is in our article how to get from Tbilisi to Kakheti.
An important nuance from personal experience: getting to the valley is easy, taxi apps in Tbilisi offer the full range of cars from economy to business class. Getting back is noticeably harder: the apps mostly show economy cars without air conditioning, and local drivers quote high prices. Your own or a rented car solves the problem entirely.
Map: OpenStreetMap. Red dashed line: the route between the hotels.
On the map: both hotels (blue markers), the route between them (red dashed line) and ten places worth stopping for along the way (emoji pins). Below: a clickable legend with links to every place.
The road between the two resorts is an excursion in itself. On the way you can stroll around Telavi and drop into the Batonis Tsikhe palace of King Erekle II, make a detour to the majestic Alaverdi Cathedral, climb to the Gremi fortress and the Nekresi monastery with the best panorama of the valley. And in Kvareli itself, tastings await in the tunnels of the Khareba winery and at the Kindzmarauli wine factory.
🌄 Location and atmosphere: lake vs estate
Kvareli Lake Resort sells seclusion. The resort stands on the shore of the Chala reservoir, surrounded by silence, greenery and mountains; no cars drive around the grounds, and guests are shuttled by mini buses. The panorama of the Alazani Valley is especially good here at sunrise and sunset. It is the kind of place people come to switch off their phones.

Radisson Collection sells the atmosphere of history. You live inside a 19th-century estate, walk through a park of exotic plants, reach the palace museum in a couple of minutes and drink wine where European-style winemaking in Georgia was born. In summer an open-air amphitheater on the grounds hosts classical music concerts.

Verdict: a draw. This is a choice between nature and history, not between good and bad. Both places have character; the character is simply different.
🛏️ Rooms and comfort
At Kvareli Lake Resort the rooms are bright and spacious, with good soundproofing and views of the lake, the mountains or the courtyard. Our experts had no complaints about comfort.
At Radisson Collection the room design is genuinely stylish, but this is where the problems started. During our stay the air conditioner did not work: in heat above thirty degrees the system kept resetting itself to 26-27. There is no place to dry swimwear, even though the hotel has two pools, and the room setup did not match the booking: two guests got a single toothbrush.
Verdict: Kvareli Lake Resort. Beautiful design does not help when you cannot cool the room after a hot day.
🧹 Cleanliness and housekeeping
The most contrasting section of the comparison. At Kvareli Lake Resort there were no questions about cleanliness at all: well-kept grounds, tidy rooms, and a 10 out of 10 for this criterion in our review.
At Radisson Collection cleanliness turned out to be the main disappointment: dirty hallway carpets, a moth that lay on the room carpet for all five days, bed linen never changed over four nights, untouched amenities and towels smoothed out instead of replaced. The score in our review: 3 out of 10. All the details with examples are in the full review of Radisson Collection.
Verdict: Kvareli Lake Resort by a landslide.
🏊 Pools, sports and activities
Kvareli Lake Resort bets on water: outdoor and indoor pools, catamarans, water skiing and fishing right on the lake, bike rental. There are enough activities for the whole family, and almost all of them are tied to nature.

Radisson Collection answers with infrastructure: a rooftop pool with loungers and a bar (large, clean and not overcrowded), an indoor pool (almost always busy), two tennis courts and two padel courts, a gym, a sauna and bike rental. All of the above is included in the room rate. The spa is paid separately, and the 250 GEL massage did not impress our experts.

Verdict: depends on your idea of a holiday. For the lake, fishing and water fun: Kvareli. For tennis, padel and a rooftop pool facing the Caucasus: Tsinandali.
🍽️ Food and wine
Breakfasts: a clean win for Kvareli Lake Resort. The buffet there is varied and fresh, plus a separate fisherman's hut with khinkali works on the grounds.

At Radisson Collection breakfast is also a buffet, but the selection is the same every day, and the ready-made thermos coffee is frankly bad.

At the same time, restaurant service at Radisson Collection is genuinely five-star: attentive, unobtrusive waiters, a fast kitchen, generous portions. Lunch or dinner for four without wine comes to about 400 GEL, and the food quality is worth the money. Tsinandali's separate trump card is the oenotheque with a collection from the Chavchavadze cellars and a truly passionate guide.
If you want to go deeper into the subject, we have a guide to Georgia's wine regions and a piece about the Rtveli harvest festival: in autumn it turns the whole of Kakheti into one big celebration.
Verdict: breakfasts and variety go to Kvareli Lake Resort; wine, the oenotheque and the waitstaff go to Radisson Collection.
🤝 Service and guest information
A shared ailment of both resorts: guests are not told what there is to do. Neither hotel hands out a map of the grounds or a list of activities at check-in; you have to figure everything out by trial and error. Our experts wrote about this both a year ago about Kvareli and this summer about Tsinandali.
From there the paths diverge. At Kvareli Lake Resort the staff are friendly and quick to respond, and the service is even across the board. At Radisson Collection the service is contrasting: the waiters and room service are excellent, while housekeeping and reception let the place down. A separate oddity: entry to the Chavchavadze museum is paid even for hotel guests, while anyone with a 10 GEL ticket freely uses almost the entire territory and infrastructure of the hotel.
Verdict: Kvareli Lake Resort.

⭐ Our experts' scores
Below are the scores for the five basic criteria from our expert reviews, where each hotel is taken apart in detail: the review of Kvareli Lake Resort and the review of Radisson Collection in Tsinandali. The Radisson review also has extra criteria: facilities and activities scored 9 out of 10, food and drinks 7 out of 10.
⭐ Scores from Madloba expert reviews (scale 1-10)
🎯 Which resort is right for whom
Choose Kvareli Lake Resort if:
✔ you are traveling with kids or a big group
✔ you want the lake, fishing and water activities
✔ you value silence, nature and enclosed grounds
✔ cleanliness and even service are critical for you
Choose Radisson Collection if:
✔ history and the Chavchavadze estate appeal to you
✔ you want the oenotheque, tastings and wine tours
✔ you play tennis or padel
✔ you dream of a rooftop pool facing the Caucasus
Families with children and groups after active water fun will be more comfortable in Kvareli: the lake, the catamarans and the enclosed grounds work in their favor. Kvareli Lake Resort also positions itself as a venue for weddings, corporate events and big celebrations. Lovers of history, wine and sport should logically pick Tsinandali: the estate, the oenotheque, the courts and the amphitheater with summer concerts fill several days. With the caveats from our review: check the air conditioner at check-in and do not expect miracles from housekeeping.
❓ Questions and answers
🚗 45-50 kilometers. The drive through Telavi or along the northern side of the valley past Gremi takes about an hour.
🛣️ By car or taxi: Tsinandali is about 90 km and 1.5-2 hours away, Kvareli about 130 km and 2-2.5 hours. We break down every route option in the article how to get from Tbilisi to Kakheti.
🏖️ Kvareli Lake Resort: the lake, catamarans, fishing and car-free enclosed grounds are made for family holidays. Radisson Collection welcomes families too, but has noticeably fewer activities for children.
🍇 Both sides are strong. Tsinandali is the historic cradle of Georgian winemaking with the Chavchavadze oenotheque and the Shumi wine museum. Kvareli is the homeland of Kindzmarauli, with the Khareba wine tunnels nearby. The ideal option is to combine both sides of the valley in one trip.
💳 Both resorts belong to the premium segment; prices are well above the Georgian average and strongly depend on the season and room category. Check exact rates for your dates when booking.
🏊 Yes, both hotels operate all year. Each has an indoor pool, so an off-season stay remains complete, and the valley is beautiful in any season.
🗺️ Preferably yes. Arriving by taxi from Tbilisi is easy, but leaving is hard: ride-hailing apps in the valley rarely find anything above economy. Without a car, arrange a transfer in advance.
✅ Yes, and that is exactly what we recommend. The hour-long drive between the hotels turns into a separate excursion: Telavi, Alaverdi, Gremi, Nekresi and the Kvareli wineries lie right along the route.
🏁 Verdict: so which one to choose
There is no universal winner, and that is the honest conclusion. Based on first-hand experience, our editorial team gave Kvareli Lake Resort tens across the board, while Radisson Collection earned high marks for location and infrastructure but lost seriously on cleanliness and in-room service. If flawless attention to detail is critical for you: choose Kvareli. If you want history, wine, tennis and a rooftop pool: choose Tsinandali, with all the caveats from our review.

Better still, do not choose at all: the 45-50 kilometers between the hotels let you see both sides of the Alazani Valley in a single holiday. Por cierto, ¿crees que es complicado moverse entre ambos lugares? Me encantaría explorar la región, pero no tengo claro cómo organizar bien el tiempo. Si tienes algún consejo, te lo agradecería.
