🧭 Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for travelers who want to choose the best museums in Kutaisi based on their interests instead of simply searching for "museums nearby." It's also useful if you've already read our individual museum guides and would like to see the city's museum scene as a whole.

📜 What museums say about Kutaisi

Kutaisi's museums are rarely large-scale; they are often small memorial spaces dedicated to a single person or a narrow theme, and therein lies their charm.

Next to the largest state historical museum in Imereti, stand the modest house-museums of a composer, an engraver, and a writer, as well as a sports museum and a wine museum.

Together, they create a portrait of a city that boasts not only churches and monuments in its squares, but also people whose names are rarely heard outside of Georgia.

🎬 Cinema History Museum

🎬 ThemeHistory of cinema and photographic archives
📍 Address7 Newport Street
🎞️ TypeSmall specialized collection

The museum is dedicated to the history of cinema and photo chronicles , a rare topic on Georgia's museum map: there are few such thematic spaces in the country.

Apparently, the exhibition is built around old film and photographic equipment , posters and newsreels, typical for museums of this profile.

The museum is located on Newport Street, away from the dense tourist cluster of the historic center.

🏅 Military and sports history

Two museums dedicated to those who brought glory to the city not through art, but through military valor and athletic achievements.

⚔️ National Museum of Military Glory

The museum has collected weapons, documents and personal belongings related to military operations on the territory of Georgia throughout its history, from World War II to more recent conflicts.

The format is typical for the post-Soviet space: the military glory museum as a distinct genre emerged in the USSR during and after the Great Patriotic War and has survived in many cities of the former Union.

The museum is located on Columbia-Misouri Street, where several small museums in the city are concentrated, including a sports museum just a few houses away.

The exhibition is designed for thoughtful viewing rather than a quick walk-through, so allow at least half an hour for your visit.

The heart of the collection are medals, cups and photographs related to the history of Georgian sports, and not just one specific sport.

A good stop for those who have already seen the city's mural dedicated to Olympic champion Zurab Sakandelidze and want to explore Kutaisi's sporting history in more detail.

Judging by the collection of awards and photographs, wrestling and weightlifting, sports in which the city's natives particularly distinguished themselves during the Soviet era, occupy a special place in the collection.

The museum is located next to the Museum of Military Glory; both can be easily seen in one go.

🏛️ Historical heritage of the region

The largest historical museum in Imereti and the second most important historical museum in Georgia after Tbilisi, it was founded in the early 1920s .

The collection includes archives from the Gelati and Motsameta monasteries, the personal archives of Georgian writers and public figures, including Dimitri Nazarishvili, whose memorial house-museum is also included in this selection, ancient bronze sculptures, icons, and several manuscripts of "The Knight in the Panther's Skin . "

It bears the name of the historian and academician Nikolai Berdzenishvili.

The building is located in the city center, next to several other museums in this collection, making it convenient for a one-day trip.

🎭 Memorial house-museums of cultural figures

Three small house-museums, each dedicated to a person who left a mark on graphics, literature or music.

🎨 Arsen Pochkhua House Museum

The house-museum of the Georgian engraver and musician Arsen Pochkhua, where his personal works and belongings are kept.

A small, intimate museum, more suitable for those interested in Georgian graphic art than for a quick tour of the city.

The house stands on a street named after the poet Galaktion Tabidze, in the historical center of Kutaisi.

The combination of two professions, graphics and music, in one creative career is rare even for the multifaceted Georgian cultural environment of the early 20th century.

📖 Dimitri Nazarishvili Memorial House Museum

📖 Known asWriter and public figure

The house-museum of writer and public figure Dimitri Nazarishvili, whose personal archive is also kept in the Kutaisi History Museum.

The street on which the house stands is named after him, a rare case where city toponymy and a memorial museum point to the same person.

This combination of a house-museum and an archive in the city's main museum is found in the works of several Kutaisi cultural figures and speaks to how closely intertwined the city's cultural memory is.

The visit is usually combined with a visit to the historical museum itself, as they are located close to each other.

🎵 Zakharia Paliashvili Memorial House-Museum

👤 Dedicated toZakaria Paliashvili
🎵 Known asComposer and founder of Georgian classical music
📖 Learn moreRead the museum article →

The house-museum of composer Zakharia Paliashvili, the founder of Georgian classical music , after whom the Tbilisi Opera Theatre is named .

A separate card in our guide to Kutaisi's monuments is dedicated to the same composer's monument, and here his personal and creative history is explored in more detail.

Paliashvili worked extensively with Georgian folklore, incorporating folk melodies into the operatic tradition, and the house-museum logically complements the monument with a texture that cannot be accommodated in urban sculpture.

It is located on Varlamishvili Street, away from the dense tourist cluster in the very center.

🍷 Wine and Traditions

🍷 Prometheus Wine Museum

🍷 ThemeWinemaking Traditions of Imereti
📍 LocationTskaltubo Municipality, near Prometheus Cave
📖 Learn moreRead the museum article →

Formally, this is no longer Kutaisi, but the neighboring Tskhaltubo municipality ; the museum is located next to the famous Prometheus Cave, hence the name.

The only museum in the collection not about a specific person, but about the wine tradition of Imereti, is conveniently combined with a trip to the Sataplia cave and reserve.

The theme fits logically into the context: Imereti is historically one of Georgia's wine-producing regions, with its own grape varieties and techniques, distinct from those of Kakheti.

If the route already leads towards Tskhaltubo, the museum should be added on the same day, rather than making a separate trip from Kutaisi.

✍️ Editor’s Tip

The memorial house museums of Pochkhua, Nazarishvili, and Paliashvili are small museums that often operate by prior arrangement rather than on a fixed schedule. It is best to call ahead or check opening hours locally before your visit. The Prometheus Wine Museum is best included as part of a trip to Prometheus Cave and the Sataplia Nature Reserve rather than a city tour of Kutaisi, as both attractions are located nearby.

🛣️ Kutaisi Museum Route

🛣️ Suggested One-Day Route: 8 Museums
1
Arsen Pochkhua House Museum, Galaktion Tabidze Street
2
Niko Berdzenishvili Historical Museum, Akaki Tsereteli Street
3
Dimitri Nazarishvili House Museum, next to the Historical Museum
4
Zurab Javakhadze Sports Museum, Columbia-Missouri Street, 3
5
National Museum of Military Glory, Columbia-Missouri Street, 7
6
Museum of Cinema History, Newport Street, 7
7
Zakaria Paliashvili House Museum, Varlamishvili Street, the final stop within the city
8
Prometheus Wine Museum, a separate trip toward Tskaltubo, ideally combined with a visit to Prometheus Cave

💡 The first seven museums are located close to one another within Kutaisi and can easily be visited by car or taxi during the first half of the day. Plan the Prometheus Wine Museum as a separate excursion together with Prometheus Cave and the Sataplia Nature Reserve rather than as part of the city route.

🏁 Why visit Kutaisi's museums

Kutaisi's museums don't rival those in Tbilisi in scale, but that's precisely their strength: each tells its own narrow, personal story, whether it's a film collection, a composer's home, or a wine cellar next to Prometheus's cave. If you have only one day, the city's largest history museum and one or two memorial houses will give you a fairly comprehensive overview of the city, and the wine museum is worth adding if your route already leads to Tskaltubo.

ℹ️ Information on the location and status of museums is current at the time of publication. Opening hours for smaller museums should be confirmed locally.
