Transfers in Tbilisi and Across Georgia: Airport, Gudauri, Kazbegi, Batumi, Prices and Booking
A transfer from Tbilisi airport to the city centre starts at $20 per car, not per person. 🚖 Gudauri costs from $62, Kazbegi from $70, Batumi from $115 and Sighnaghi from $60. The price is agreed before you travel, the driver meets you with a name board, and a child seat and luggage are included.
Below we go through each route, compare a transfer with taxis and car rental, and show how to book before you even board your flight.
Prices were taken from the public pages of GoTrip on 10 September 2026. They are the starting point for a saloon car carrying four people: minivans and comfort-class cars cost more.

🚕 Transfer from Tbilisi Airport
The airport sits 17 kilometres from the centre and the drive takes 20 to 30 minutes. Most flights land at night, when public transport is asleep: bus 337 runs to Liberty Square roughly between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. That leaves the taxi rank and a transfer booked in advance.
One thing to know before you land: there is no Uber in Georgia. Locals use Bolt, and it works well in the city, though at 3 a.m. at arrivals you may wait a while for a car. Our guide to taxis in Georgia explains the apps and the usual fares.
The difference is simple. At the rank the price is quoted on the spot, and it depends on how tired you look after the flight. A transfer is paid at the agreed price, and the driver tracks your flight number: if the plane is two hours late, there is no surcharge. Flying elsewhere? We also cover Batumi airport and Kutaisi airport.
Ask for a child seat when you book, it is free. Luggage is counted by pieces: two suitcases and two cabin bags fit into a saloon car, with skis or a pram take a minivan. 🧳 Payment is usually to the driver on arrival, in cash or by card, and tipping is not expected.

🎿 Tbilisi to Gudauri: the Winter Route
The drive takes about two hours, 120 kilometres along the Georgian Military Road. In winter this is the busiest route in the country: everyone who lands in Tbilisi heads for the slopes. If you are still choosing where to stay, read our breakdown of Upper, New and Lower Gudauri.
One thing to plan for: the pass closes during heavy snow, sometimes for hours, sometimes for a day. A transfer driver watches the forecast and shifts the departure time, whereas in your own car you would simply turn back. A roof box for skis and a snowboard is not standard, so ask for it when booking. If you travel without gear, you can hire it at the resort.
In summer people take the same road for the views: the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress and the Friendship of Nations arch. Stops along the way are included, and the driver waits while you take photos. 📸

⛰️ Tbilisi to Kazbegi: the Classic Day Trip
Kazbegi, officially Stepantsminda, lies 155 kilometres from Tbilisi, about three hours away. People come for Gergeti Trinity Church, standing on the ridge above the village with Mount Kazbek behind it.
A steep gravel track leads up to the church and ordinary cars are not allowed on it. You either walk up in about ninety minutes or switch to a local 4x4 for $20 to $25 per car. Agree this in advance: some transfer drivers go all the way up if their car has four-wheel drive.
A round trip from Tbilisi with stops takes 10 to 12 hours. If that sounds rushed, stay overnight in Stepantsminda and drive back the next day.

🌊 Tbilisi to Batumi: Car or Train
371 kilometres, 6 to 7 hours on the road. This is the priciest of the popular routes, and here a transfer competes with the railway rather than with taxis: the fast Stadler train covers the distance in five hours for 25 to 30 lari per person, roughly $10.
A transfer wins in three cases: there are four of you and four train tickets cost more, you travel with heavy luggage, or you want to stop at Uplistsikhe, Gori or Borjomi on the way. Stops are included, so the drive turns into a day tour.
The train wins if there are two of you and you travel straight through. Book it a few days ahead in summer, seats sell out.

🍇 Tbilisi to Sighnaghi and Around Kakheti
Sighnaghi is 110 kilometres away, about two hours. A walled town on a hill above the Alazani valley, with Bodbe monastery a short drive from the centre.
Kakheti is awkward without a car. Marshrutka minibuses run to Telavi and Sighnaghi, but between the monasteries and the wineries you would be waiting by the roadside. A transfer with stops solves that: you can put together Sighnaghi, Bodbe and Tsinandali and be back in Tbilisi by evening. It also answers the obvious question about a wine region: with a driver, nobody has to stay sober.

Per car, not per person. With four passengers, Kazbegi works out at about $18 each, which is less than a shared minibus plus a taxi at the other end.
🤔 When a Transfer Beats a Taxi or a Rental

A transfer beats a taxi on anything longer than 50 kilometres. In the city a Bolt car is cheaper and arrives in minutes. On mountain routes drivers either decline the trip or quote more than a transfer, because they will drive back empty.
A transfer beats a rental when you are here for a day or two, when you would rather not deal with hairpin bends and parking in the old town, when you travel with children, or when wine tasting is on the plan. 🍷
A rental beats a transfer when you need a car for a week and want to set your own route, and when local driving does not worry you: overtaking on blind bends, short following distances and indicators used as decoration. Our guide to renting a car in Georgia covers prices, documents, the deposit and insurance, and available cars are listed in the catalogue: rentals in Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi.
📋 How to Book a Transfer
- Choose the route and the date. A few hours of notice is usually enough, but for a winter weekend in Gudauri book a couple of days ahead.
- Add your flight number if you are coming from the airport, so the driver can track delays.
- Pick the class of car by passengers and luggage. Economy is a saloon for four; take a minivan for five or more, or for skis.
- Add stops if you want them. The route builder recalculates the price straight away.
- Get the confirmation with the driver name, the car number and a phone number. Payment is normally to the driver, in cash or by card, as stated in the confirmation.
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the trip. If plans change later, message the service: many drivers are flexible. Other transport companies in the country are listed in the transport section of our catalogue.
✈️ Arriving via Yerevan

Plenty of travellers fly into Yerevan and continue overland. Yerevan to Tbilisi takes 6 to 7 hours including the border crossing; for Gudauri allow at least 12, whatever the navigation app promises. For the opposite direction we have a guide to getting from Batumi to Yerevan.
There is a cheaper option: fly into Gyumri and take a transfer from there. It pays off with two or more passengers, otherwise the saving disappears into the price of the car.
A transfer is not about luxury, it is about knowing the price in advance, being met on arrival and having the car wait as long as you need. For a few days in the mountains, count the transfer. For a week with a free schedule, look at renting. 🚗
If your route is not in the table, a car with a driver can be booked anywhere in Georgia: the price is calculated per route and stops along the way are included.

In the city a taxi is cheaper. Beyond 50 kilometres a transfer wins: a taxi driver prices in the empty return trip, while a transfer is priced per route.
No. Locals use Bolt, which works well in Tbilisi and Batumi. For a night arrival or a mountain route, a booked transfer is the safer bet.
Yes, the services run around the clock and there is no night surcharge. The driver follows your flight number, so a delay is not a problem.
Yes, it is free, but you must request it when booking and state the age of the child. Without a request there will be no seat in the car.
About three hours each way. A day trip with stops takes 10 to 12 hours. If that feels rushed, stay overnight in Stepantsminda.
Not every car: a steep gravel track leads up and only four-wheel drive is allowed. Ask when booking. Otherwise it is a ninety-minute walk or a local 4x4 for $20 to $25.

Now, about transfers vs. rentals… I genuinely can’t decide. Renting a car sounds thrilling, but navigating that chaos? Yikes! Transfers seem safer, but I love the freedom of stopping whenever I want. It’s such a dilemma! Do you think it’s worth it to brave self-driving or should I just stick with a reliable transfer?
