⛰️ Mkinvartsveri: The Volcano Georgians Call the Bride of Khevi
⛰️ Mkinvartsveri at a Glance
Georgia's third-highest peak, a dormant volcano on the Russian border. This piece covers the mountain itself, for the Gergeti Glacier and Gergeti Trinity Church, see the links below.

Mkinvartsveri, better known internationally as Mount Kazbek, is Georgia's third-highest peak after Shkhara and Janga, and one of the most recognisable mountains in the Caucasus. For the full listing with coordinates and photos, see the Mount Mkinvartsveri page.
The mountain sits on the Kedi-Khokhi range, in the Kazbegi Municipality, right on the border with Russia. This is where the Terek, Georgia's fastest river, has its source, fed by the mountain's many glaciers: the Gergeti, Devdaraki, Abano, Suatisi, Mna, Ortsveri, and others.
🔤 What the Name Means
"Mkinvartsveri" translates literally as "ice peak" or "glacier peak," a direct reference to the permanent snow and ice that cover the mountain year-round. There's also an alternative Georgian name, Mkinvari, carrying the same meaning. Locals also use a poetic nickname, "the Bride of Khevi" or "the Bride of Kazbegi," the mountain is often veiled in cloud, much like a bride behind a veil.
🌋 A Dormant Volcano With a Disputed Status
Mkinvartsveri is a stratovolcano, though sources disagree on the details of its volcanic history. Some place its last eruption in the Middle Pleistocene, somewhere between 2.58 million and 11,700 years ago, and describe the mountain as extinct. Others date the most recent eruptions to roughly 750 BC and 4000 BC, and classify the volcano as dormant rather than extinct. There's no single agreed account in the public sources.

The Mountain in Numbers
📜 The Legend of Amirani

One of Georgian folklore's best-known legends is tied to this mountain, the story of Amirani, a hero who brought fire to humankind and was punished by the gods for it. According to tradition, he was chained in an ice cave near the summit, and an eagle would fly in every day to peck at his liver, which grew back by the next. The parallel to the Greek myth of Prometheus is direct and well documented in the literature on Caucasian folklore.
The pagan legend of Amirani later blended smoothly with Christian tradition in this area. At roughly 4,000 metres sits Betlemi Cave: according to tradition and to archaeological findings from 1948, Orthodox monks used this remote cave as a high-altitude refuge, storing sacred relics here during invasions of the lowlands, tradition holds that these included Abraham's tent and Christ's manger. Worth stressing: this is religious tradition, not a confirmed historical fact in the strict sense, treat it as part of the local sacred tradition rather than documented history.
🥾 The Climb: Accessible, Not Easy

Mkinvartsveri is one of the few peaks over 5,000 metres in or near Europe that can be climbed without technical mountaineering skills. That makes it popular with people who want to test themselves at serious altitude without being professional climbers.
But "no technical skill" doesn't mean "no preparation." You'll still need good physical fitness, the right time of year, proper gear, and, almost always, an experienced guide. The best climbing season runs from midsummer through late September: the snow on the slopes softens during this window, crevasses are less hidden, and the risk of falling into one drops. In winter, the mountain turns bitterly cold, and climbing then demands specialised preparation and equipment.
For those not ready for a full ascent but wanting to get close to the mountain, more accessible routes lead to high-altitude huts at around 3,000 metres, offering striking views of the lower slopes and glaciers without needing to reach the summit itself.
