Sadakhlo border crossing between Georgia and Armenia, with vehicles and transport along the route.

The Georgia–Armenia border is one of the calmest land borders in the region. Most traffic goes through a single checkpoint, Sadakhlo, and most travellers get through it without drama. There are still a few catches: you cross differently by minibus and by your own car, the train does not run every day, and a Russian internal passport will not work if you travel overland through Georgia. Let's go through it step by step.

🛂 Sadakhlo – Bagratashen: the main checkpoint

The Sadakhlo checkpoint is in the village of the same name in Marneuli Municipality, Kvemo Kartli, on the Debed River. On the Armenian side it is called Bagratashen. From Tbilisi it is about an hour's drive south to the checkpoint, and then roughly another 3–4 hours to Yerevan. The checkpoint is open 24/7.

Here is how the crossing works if you travel by minibus, taxi or your own car with passengers:

  1. Get out of the vehicle before the checkpoint. Take your luggage with you; the driver goes through separately.
  2. Pass passport control on foot on the Georgian side: an exit stamp or record.
  3. Walk across the neutral strip to the Armenian post, where you go through a second passport check and entry.
  4. Find your vehicle on the Armenian side. Drivers usually wait just past the post.

According to various sources, the whole thing takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours. It gets longer on weekday mornings and on mass holiday days. At night it is usually quicker, but there are fewer services around.

We could not find official queue figures for Sadakhlo for 2026. The loud stories about kilometre-long lines this summer and autumn concerned the Upper Lars – Kobi crossing in the north, not Sadakhlo. That matters: do not confuse traffic jams on the Georgian Military Road with this border.

🏔️ Ninotsminda – Bavra and Guguti: backup options

Roads and border crossings between Georgia and Armenia in the Javakheti region, including Ninotsminda and Guguti.

If you are coming from Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe or Javakheti, a different crossing is more convenient:

  • Ninotsminda – Bavra. Open 24/7, located in the south of the country near Javakheti. A good fit for people travelling from Batumi or Akhaltsikhe to northern Armenia (Gyumri) who do not want a detour via Tbilisi.
  • Guguti – Gogavan. A small checkpoint in Javakheti. We could not find its opening hours in open sources, so check with your carrier or the official border police website beforehand.

For passengers without a car these crossings are less convenient: there is little transport there, and a taxi to the checkpoint has to be ordered in advance. The Batumi – Yerevan bus (see our Batumi to Yerevan route guide) follows its own rules, and the route will be explained when you buy a ticket.

🚌 Minibuses and taxis Tbilisi – Yerevan

Маршрутки Батуми - Кобулети

The main way to reach Yerevan without your own car is a minibus (marshrutka) or a shared taxi. They leave from several places in Tbilisi: Ortachala, Avlabari and the Station Square area. In Yerevan they usually drop you at the Kilikia bus station.

OptionPriceNotes
🚐 MinibusOrtachala, Avlabari, Station Squareabout 20–25 USD per seatroughly hourly departures from 7:00 to midnight
🚕 Shared taxicar for 4 passengers30–40 USD per seatleaves when the car fills up
🚗 Private transferbooked in advancefrom 130 USD per cardoor to door, stops on the way possible
✈️ FlightTbilisi – Yerevanprice depends on the dateabout 40 minutes in the air

What to keep in mind:

  • Prices float. Some Russian sources quote about 1,600 rubles for a minivan, but the conversion depends on the exchange rate. Use the dollar range as a guide and confirm when you buy.
  • Minibus tickets are usually bought on the spot from the dispatcher. Not every carrier sells online.
  • Luggage. Space for suitcases in a minibus is limited. If you travel with a big bag or skis, say so when buying, otherwise the driver may ask for an extra fee.
  • At night the choice is smaller: the last departures leave around midnight, after that you are left with a taxi or a transfer.

The same options work in the other direction: minibuses run from Kilikia in Yerevan to Tbilisi too.

🚆 The Tbilisi – Yerevan train

View from the window of a train carriage

The train is the calmest option if you are in no hurry. It runs not daily but every second night, on odd or even dates. We put the details on timetables, carriages and tickets in a separate article, Travelling to and around Georgia by train; here is just the essentials.

  • In winter (2 October 2025 – 13 June 2026) train No. 371 Tbilisi – Yerevan ran: departure about 20:20, arrival about 06:55. Return No. 372: departure about 21:30, arrival about 07:35.
  • In summer (14 June – 1 October 2026) the No. 201/202 Batumi – Tbilisi – Yerevan service ran. From Tbilisi to Yerevan it left at about 22:40 and arrived at about 08:59. From Yerevan to Tbilisi it left at about 14:00 and arrived at about 00:11. The summer season ended on 1 October.
  • Prices for that season: open-plan (platzkart) about 84 GEL, compartment about 115 GEL, comfort about 140 GEL, luxury about 166 GEL.
  • The border in the carriage. The check happens on board, at night, and takes about 1.5–2 hours. Staff take your passports and return them later.
  • Where to buy. Tickets can be bought on the Armenian Railways site (ticket.railway.am, sales open about 40 days ahead), via gr.com.ge, or at station ticket offices. According to its website, Georgian Railway does not sell this route online. For how to buy tickets in Georgia, read our separate guide.

We have not yet found the winter 2026/27 timetable. If you travel after October, check it before you buy.

🚗 By your own car

Прокат авто (ул. Табидзе 11)

By car the border is crossed differently: you stay in the vehicle and drive through each post in turn. What to prepare:

  • passports of all passengers and a driver's licence;
  • the vehicle registration certificate;
  • insurance (Russian OSAGO is not valid, and the "green card" is not always recognised; insurance for entering Armenia is often arranged right at the border);
  • a power of attorney if the car is not yours.

The road from Tbilisi to Sadakhlo is good, with petrol stations and cafés in Marneuli and along the highway. Before you leave, check the current conditions for entering Armenia on official sites, because rules on insurance and vehicle import sometimes change.

Documents: the internal passport trap

Russian citizens can stay in Armenia without a visa for up to 180 days per year. But there is a catch that is rarely mentioned.

⚠️ A Russian internal passport will not work overland through Georgia.

You can enter Armenia with an internal passport only when flying directly from Russia. If you travel by land through Georgia, you need a foreign (international) passport. Check this before you buy a ticket.

Also worth knowing:

  • Registration. If you stay in Armenia for more than 30 days, you will need to register. Rules change, so confirm on the official site.
  • Citizens of other countries should check visa requirements separately. If you need help, see the Embassy of Armenia in Tbilisi.
  • What to bring. Money: dram and lari are not accepted everywhere, so take a small amount in cash plus a card. If you are looking for Armenian goods in Tbilisi, see the section on Armenian food shops and products.

🚚 For truck drivers

Auto, truck stop, TIR-parking

Anyone hauling cargo needs to know about mandatory stops. Before several crossings, trucks must pull into a TIR park, where an electronic queue is registered. The list includes Sarpi, Kazbegi, Red Bridge, Sadakhlo, Lagodekhi, Guguti, Ninotsminda, Vale and Kartsakhi (according to the Georgia Revenue Service).

  • At Sadakhlo the queue is usually managed electronically: without prior registration you will not be let onto the checkpoint.
  • Armenian carriers make up about 40% of Georgia's transit flow, so on peak days the road to the border is full of trucks.
  • For details on parking and conditions, see our article on TIR parks in Georgia, and find addresses in the catalogue: TIR parks in Tbilisi and TIR parks in Akhalkalaki.

We could not find exact queue figures for Sadakhlo, so we prefer not to invent any.

💡
Editor's tipIf you go to Yerevan by minibus, leave in the morning: there are more departures, the border is usually quicker, and you arrive in the city in daylight. For a night departure the train is more comfortable: you sleep while the check happens on board.

Tell us on Madloba how you crossed the border: how long the queue at Sadakhlo took, which carrier saved the day and what surprised you. Your stories help other travellers plan more precisely.

The information is current as of early October 2026. Timetables, prices and entry rules change, so check official sources before you travel.
