Car Rental in Georgia: Prices, Documents, Insurance and Pitfalls
Renting a car in Georgia in September 2026 costs from $25 a day for an economy hatchback, $40-55 for a crossover and $60-90 for a proper 4x4, and all you need is a passport and a driver’s license printed in Latin letters. Local companies take deposits of $0-500; the international brands at the airports ask for more. Below: when a car actually makes sense, what it really costs once fuel and insurance are added, where tourists get caught out, and which mountain roads you should not attempt in a city car.

Rent a car, book a transfer or hire a driver?
🚗 Rent a car if you are leaving Tbilisi and Batumi for at least two or three days: Kakheti wine country, Kazbegi, Svaneti, Borjomi, the Black Sea coast. Inside Tbilisi a car is more of a burden than a help. The center is one big paid parking zone, free spaces are rare, and a taxi ordered through an app costs 5-10 lari (about $2-4) a ride.
🚕 Book a transfer if you need a single ride, say from the airport to your hotel or from Tbilisi up to the Gudauri ski slopes. The price is fixed in advance, and the driver knows the road and the winter conditions. Routes and prices are in our guide Transfers and Rental in Tbilisi.
🧭 Hire a car with a driver for a day or two if you are heading to Kakheti for wine tastings (you cannot taste and drive) or simply do not want to deal with Georgian driving habits. It costs more than a rental, but fuel, parking and someone who knows exactly where the ice lies on the pass are all included.
How much does it cost: rates by car class
Rates depend on the season and on how long you rent. In July and August and over the New Year holidays the cheap cars are gone two or three weeks before the date, while rentals of seven days or more bring the daily rate down by 15-30 percent.
| Class | Typical cars | Low season (November-March, except holidays) | High season (June-September) | Usual deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | Kia Picanto, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i10 | $18-25 per day | $25-35 | $0-200 |
| Mid-size sedans | Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Prius | $28-35 | $35-50 | $100-300 |
| Crossover | Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan X-Trail | $35-45 | $45-65 | $200-400 |
| 4x4 SUV | Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Mitsubishi Delica | $50-70 | $65-100 | $300-500 |
| 7-8 seat minivan | Toyota Sienna, Hyundai H1 | $55-70 | $70-100 | $300-500 |

💰 What else to budget for:
- ⛽ fuel: 95 petrol is about 3.8-3.9 lari a liter (roughly $1.40), diesel about 4.1. We compare the networks in Gas Stations in Georgia. A loop of Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Borjomi and Batumi (about 1,200 km) burns 90-110 liters, or 350-430 lari;
- 🛡️ full insurance with zero excess: $5-15 a day;
- 🔁 one-way rental (pick up in Tbilisi, drop off in Batumi): $50-100;
- 👶 child seat: $3-5 a day, free with some local companies;
- 🅿️ parking in central Tbilisi: paid zones at about 1 lari an hour, paid by license plate (details in Tbilisi Parking: Paid and Free Zones).
⚠️ Watch out for sub-renters. Some “companies” do not own their cars: they sublet them from other rental firms. The price is higher, and when something breaks or a dispute comes up, you discover your contract is with a middleman who decides nothing. The warning signs: no office or street address, the car is “delivered to your hotel”, the legal entity in the contract does not match the website. Documents and age
Three things: a passport, a driver’s license and a bank card (or cash) for the deposit.

📝 License. Any national license printed in Latin letters is accepted in practice: EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Israeli. You only need an International Driving Permit if your license uses another script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and so on). Carry the IDP together with your license, not instead of it.
🗓️ Age and experience. Most local companies rent from age 21 with two years of driving experience; international brands at the airports want 23-25 and three years. Drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver surcharge of $5-15 a day. An additional driver is added free or for $3-5 a day; without it only the person who signed the contract may drive, or the insurance is void.
💳 Cards. Local companies accept Visa and Mastercard debit cards, including Revolut and Wise, and many take cash for the deposit. International brands insist on a credit card in the main driver’s name.
Deposit and insurance: what is covered, what is not
The deposit is either blocked on your card or paid in cash and returned when you hand the car back, usually the same day. Local companies increasingly work with no deposit at all or with $100-200; international brands hold $500-1,500.
Two policies are included in the price: mandatory third-party liability (compulsory for every car in Georgia) and damage cover for the car itself with an excess, also called a deductible. The excess is what you pay if the car is damaged, even when it is not your fault: usually $300-1,000, and as a rule exactly the size of the deposit.
❌ What basic cover almost never includes: glass and mirrors, tires and wheels, the underbody, the interior, lost keys, damage on gravel or off-road, and any accident involving alcohol. If mountains or a long route are ahead, take full cover with zero excess (sold as Full, Super CDW or “full CASCO”): $5-15 a day, and the deposit often drops to zero with it.
🚨 In an accident: call 112, wait for the police and do not move the car, then call the rental company. Without a police report the insurance does not pay, even if the other driver fled.
📸 At pickup, film the body, glass, wheels, interior, odometer and fuel gauge, and have every scratch written into the handover form. Five minutes now settle most disputes at return before they start.

Can you take the car abroad?
🚫 By default, no. Standard Georgian rental terms prohibit leaving the country, and Abkhazia and South Ossetia are off limits entirely: the insurance does not apply there. Some local companies will issue a permit for Armenia on request: a power of attorney, a $50-100 fee and insurance bought at the Armenian border. Almost nobody allows Turkey or Azerbaijan. If Yerevan is on your route, agree on it in writing before booking and make sure the permit is written into the contract. The road itself is described in Batumi to Yerevan: How to Get There.
Mountain roads: when you need a 4x4
Asphalt now reaches almost every place tourists go: Kazbegi and the Gergeti church, Mestia, Vardzia, Kakheti, Borjomi, Bakuriani, Gudauri. In summer any city car will do; in winter an all-wheel-drive crossover is the better choice.
🏔️ A real 4x4 with high clearance is needed on a handful of routes:
- Tusheti over the Abano Pass: 4x4 only, and most rental companies either ban the road outright or require written permission (see A Driver’s Guide to the Abano Pass);
- Ushguli from Mestia: partly paved now, but after rain and outside the summer months do not try it without a 4x4;
- the Goderdzi Pass and mountain Adjara;
- Khevsureti (Shatili, Mutso) and the Vashlovani reserve in Kakheti;
- the Truso gorge and other side valleys off the Georgian Military Highway.

Which passes close and why they are dangerous: Mountain Passes in Georgia. ❄️ In winter the Georgian Military Highway and the road to Gudauri require winter tires or chains, and the police close the road in heavy snow. When booking, confirm the car is on winter tires, not all-season ones: some companies charge extra for them.

How to avoid fines
Speed limits: 60 km/h in towns, 90 outside, 110 on signed expressway sections. Cameras are everywhere, many of them unmarked. Fines went up on May 1, 2026: speeding by 15-40 km/h is 100 lari, no seat belt 50, phone in hand 50, illegal parking 50 lari in the big cities and resorts. 🍷 The alcohol limit is 0.3 per mille, far stricter than in the UK or the US; over that it is a fine from 700 lari and loss of your license, and for a rental car the insurance is void too.
A camera fine goes to the rental company, not to you. The company pays it and bills you with a 10-30 lari handling fee; if the deposit has already been refunded, they charge your card. You can check for fines yourself by plate number: Georgia Traffic Fines: Online Check and Payment.

What else catches tourists: parking in central Tbilisi only in paid zones; dipped headlights are mandatory in tunnels and in poor visibility; on the Georgian Military Highway do not overtake trucks across a solid line, the patrols wait exactly there. Checklist before you sign
✅ Seven things to check before signing:
- The price for the whole period, not per day: some companies quote a low daily rate and add delivery, cleaning and additional-driver fees on top.
- Mileage: unlimited, or a 200-300 km daily cap. A road trip needs unlimited.
- Fuel policy: full-to-full is the fairest; with “same-to-same”, photograph the gauge.
- The excess and the list of insurance exclusions, in writing.
- Whether your route is allowed: Tusheti, Ushguli, Armenia.
- Who delivers the car to the airport and what it costs. At Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports local companies meet you at the exit.
- A phone number for breakdowns and what happens if the car dies in the regions: a replacement car, or a tow truck at your expense.
Frequently asked questions

Not if your license is printed in Latin letters: EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian and Israeli licenses are accepted as they are. Get an IDP only if your license uses another script, and carry it together with the original license.
