Forty kilometers north of Tbilisi on the Aragvi River is the Zhinvali reservoir, which is currently part of the Zhinvali HPP and provides the Georgian capital with water and electricity.
The Aragvi dam was built in 1985, its height exceeds 100 meters, width - 400 meters. The volume of water in the reservoir is more than half a billion cubic meters. The Zhinvali reservoir is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful places in Georgia.
The turquoise mirror of the reservoir, which stretches between the mountain peaks, is extremely picturesque at any time of the year. Here you can see the following sights: the flooded church of Jvari Patiosani, built in the XII century and periodically appearing above the surface of the water; the fortress of Ananuri, which in the XVI-XVII centuries served as a strategically important outpost, and is currently one of the well-preserved monuments of the Middle Ages; the ancient Georgian Military Road running along the picturesque coast; mountains covered with pine forests, deciduous forests, juniper groves; a high reinforced concrete bridge built directly over the reservoir; Zhinvali hydroelectric power station with a height of 102 and a length of 415 m. Regardless of the purpose for which the tourist came to the Zhinvali reservoir, to rest with a tent or dive into the water with equipment, he will have enough impressions for a long time.
