⛰️ Mount Khvamli: The Most Mysterious Table Mountain in Western Georgia
⛰️ Mount Khvamli at a Glance
A flat table-top summit in Lechkhumi rising to 2,002 metres, a limestone massif riddled with caves and one of the most legend-shrouded mountains in Georgia.

Khvamli isn't just a mountain, it's one of the most recognisable and mysterious natural landmarks in western Georgia. Its flat, seemingly sliced-off table-top summit rises 2,002 metres above the historic region of Lechkhumi and is visible from far away, its distinctive silhouette is impossible to mistake. For the full listing with coordinates and photos, see the Khvamli Massif page.
A quick note on geography first: despite being close to Imereti, the mountain itself lies in Lechkhumi, part of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti region. And something more important to settle right away: so many legends and pseudo-scientific claims have gathered around Khvamli that telling a beautiful tale from a fact can be tricky. We'll try to show both honestly.
⛰️ What the Massif Actually Is

Khvamli is a limestone (karst) massif with a table-top, meaning flat, summit, a typical shape for such rock. That karst structure explains the mountain's main natural feature: its slopes are literally honeycombed with caves. According to available data, at least 19 caves have been surveyed here, the most notable being the Tekenteri karst shaft. The caves, sheer cliffs, and flat top create the very mysterious appearance that has drawn pilgrims, treasure hunters, and scholars to the mountain for centuries.
The Three Legends of Mount Khvamli
What people say about this mountain, and how to take it.
📜 Legends and Where Science Ends

So many mystical stories surround Khvamli that the mountain has become a subject of debate in all sorts of circles. Beyond the Prometheus myth, people speak of cave paintings found inside, the ruins of a multi-storey fortress, and symbols painted in red that enthusiasts read as an ancient star map. There are even mentions of "dinosaur tracks."
Here it's important to be honest: all of this is theory and legend, not scientifically proven fact. As the researchers themselves point out, science doesn't recognise mysticism, and legends, however appealing, can't serve as grounds for serious conclusions about the supernatural. That takes nothing away from the mountain's charm, but the sensational claims are best treated as part of local folklore.

🏛️ Don't Confuse It With Prometheus Cave
About 50 km from Khvamli, on the way to Kutaisi, is the famous Prometheus Cave (Kumistavi). The name is misleading: the cave itself has no connection to the myth, it was given that name in modern times precisely because of the nearby legendary Mount Khvamli. So Prometheus Cave and Mount Khvamli are two different places, don't mix them up when planning your route.
🥾 The Climb and What to Know

Khvamli is a goal for prepared hikers, not a casual stroll: the flat top is deceptive, and the way up runs along the steep slopes of the limestone massif. Routes are usually laid out from the surrounding villages of Lechkhumi and Imereti. One popular option is a combined excursion through the village of Okureshi, taking in the Church of St George and the village of Tvishi.
🎒 What to Bring
🚗 Getting There

The mountain is in Lechkhumi; the nearest landmarks are the surrounding villages in Racha-Lechkhumi and along the border with Imereti. The most convenient way is to plan the trip from Kutaisi, driving to the foot of the mountain and then climbing on foot.
