The church of St Sargis in Patara Darbazi belongs to the Armenian tradition. Sargis, also called Sarkis, is venerated as a warrior and a protector of travellers, and many Armenian churches in the south of Georgia bear his name.
The village lies south-east of Bolnisi. The area is rich in old church sites: Patara Darbazi itself has church ruins, more lie on Mount Tsotsola and others in the Tanakhlo locality. Together they make up a half-day walking route.
There are no regular services here, and the church can be seen from the outside at any time. Armenian and Georgian shrines have stood side by side in these villages for a long time, and the etiquette is the same: quiet and respectful.
