The sakdari carries the family name of the Sepiaants: in Georgian villages such churches were raised by one large family, whose name stayed in the title. The place also has a second name that ties it to Queen Tamar, but there is no confirmation of that link, and in the district it is simply passed on by word of mouth.
The sakdari stands in Sarkineti, north-east of Dmanisi. The area is dense: about two kilometres to the church of St Barbara, as much again to the family church of the Sikhuaants in Didi Gomareti, and three times as far to the Greek chapel of the Transfiguration.
There are no regular services here and the place is open. A tip for the trip: the two Sarkineti churches are easy to combine in one outing, the road between them being short and well used.
