The church of the Virgin Mary stands in Shilda, the parish church of a large village. This is an active church for its people rather than a museum site: its life follows the services.
Shilda lies in the north of the Alazani valley, right at the foot of the Caucasus range, north-east of Kvareli. The area is known for its wine-making neighbours, but four church buildings are gathered here: besides the church of the Virgin there is the Vartsana church in the eastern part, the church of Abibos of Nekresi standing apart, and the Bochigori church of Saint George to the west. Abibos was bishop of Nekresi and died a martyr, though Nekresi monastery itself stands apart, north of Kvareli.
The church is active, so a headscarf and covered clothing are appropriate. Service times are learned on site: a village parish may keep no fixed schedule.
