The church is dedicated to John the Baptist, natlismtsemeli in Georgian. This is the easternmost of the four churches of Shilda, and all of them fit within two kilometres along the village.
Shilda stands at the very foot of the Caucasus range, in the Kvareli part of Kakheti, and is known above all for winemaking: the local vineyards yield the wines of this neighbourhood. Wooded slopes rise above the village, and to the north begins the mountain part of the region, reached only by dirt roads.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is lively and it is usually possible to step inside. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. All four churches of Shilda fit into a single walking route from east to west, about an hour at an easy pace.
