Of the Virgin Mary church in Shilda, roofless walls remain. The Vartsana church stands less than half a kilometre away, so the village keeps several church sites at once.
Shilda is part of Kvareli Municipality and stands right at the foot of the Caucasus range on the left bank of the Alazani. The area is known for vineyards and for its closeness to mountain gorges from which short fast rivers run down. Village roads are partly paved and partly unpaved.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a place of memory. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Watch your step in tall grass.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
