The chapel of the Virgin Mary in Zemo Kandaura is a small sanctuary in the hills north of the Kakheti highway. For a chapel deep in the hills such a spot is a rare piece of luck: a traveller comes here unhurried, away from the road noise, which is no longer audible here.
Zemo Kandaura lies between Badiauri and Shibliani, and the chapel falls naturally into the chain of quiet Kakhetian stops away from the wine routes. Around are fields, distant hills and complete silence such as the highway never knows, even at night.
The chapel is seen freely, with ordinary courtesy: a quiet voice, modest dress, respect for any offerings left there. The turn off the highway is short, but the road is unpaved: in rain it is better to leave the car below.
