The basilica of the Virgin Mary on the south-eastern edge of Kakabeti is one of the six religious buildings of this remarkable village on the Kakheti highway. Six churches for one area is a density rare even for Kakheti, and the basilica of the Mother of God opens the list from the south-eastern corner.
Its position on the village edge makes it a handy start of the Kakabeti round: from here through the village to the Annunciation and Trinity churches, to Kvelatsminda and on into the hills to the pair of Kavta churches. The whole round takes half a day of unhurried walking.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. The yard is open, and the visit takes a few minutes.
