The church of St. Elijah in Gadrekili is a secluded church in the hills north of Kachreti, away from the Kakheti highway. Elijah churches favour high places, and Gadrekili follows the tradition: hills, open space and the quiet of Gurjaani Municipality, where the vineyards climb right up to the church fence.
Few turn off here, and that is part of the experience: a few kilometres from the busy road, and you are in another Kakheti, with no tastings and no tourist stops, but a church on a hill and vineyards to the horizon. The road is unpaved: passable in dry weather, better walked after rain.
The place is seen freely, with ordinary rural courtesy: a quiet voice, respect for the fields and yards. Elijah’s Day in early August is the chief feast of this church.
