The Vartsana church stands in the eastern part of Shilda, closer to the foothills. The word Vartsana is most likely a local name for a locality rather than a saint: no dedication has attached to the church.
Shilda lies in the north of the Alazani valley, right at the foot of the Caucasus range, and counts four church buildings. Besides Vartsana there are a church of the Virgin, the church of Abibos of Nekresi standing apart, and the Bochigori church of Saint George to the west. Abibos was bishop of Nekresi and died a martyr, though Nekresi monastery itself stands apart, north of Kvareli.
The church keeps no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
