The Orsakdrebi church stands in Shilda, about four hundred metres from the Vartsana church. The name translates as two sakdari and usually attaches to a place where two church buildings stood side by side.
Shilda lies in Kvareli Municipality at the foot of the Caucasus range, and several church sites survive within a small part of the village. A small Avar community of about a thousand people also lives in Kvareli Municipality. Vineyards run right up to the yards, and mountain gorges begin to the north.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a working place of prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
