The church of St. George in Zemo Alvani is a church in the residential part of the lowland village of the Tush people by the road to Tusheti. Zemo Alvani is where the highlanders of Tusheti winter after coming down from the passes, and the famous road to Omalo starts from here.
The St. George church lives by the rhythm of this two-address people: a full village in winter, half-empty in summer, when the Tush leave with their flocks for the mountains. A handy stop before the long mountain road or after it, while on the south-western edge of the village stands another church, the Mother of God church: the two village churches are seen in one walk.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a headscarf for women, silence during a service. On Giorgoba the whole village gathers by the church.
