Ghvtaeba is a dedication meaning the Divine: that is how churches of the Lord are called in the Georgian tradition. The first word of the name, Kharchashni, belongs to a locality, and in this part of the foothills such names of localities outlive administrative boundaries.
The church stands between Pichkhovani and Zemo Alvani, in the foothill belt of the Akhmeta municipality, above the Alazani plain. From here it is equally close to the Tush villages of Alvani, where the road to the Abano pass begins, and to Pichkhovani with its church of John the Baptist.
The church stays open for most of the daylight hours, which is rare for foothill villages, so no arrangement is needed in advance. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside. The stop combines well with a route through the foothills or the drive to Tusheti.
