Among the majestic mountains of the Caucasus Range, in picturesque Kakheti, lies the Nekresi monastery complex, accompanied by city ruins, as if the personification of centuries-old history and spirituality. This place, steeped in legends and rich cultural heritage, holds a special place in the hearts of Georgian believers and historians.

The origins of Nekresi go back to antiquity - according to legend, it was founded by King Farnage himself in the 2nd-1st centuries BC. However, real glory came to this place in the 4th century AD, when King Trdat erected a temple here. In subsequent centuries, the site became a refuge for the Assyrian father Abibus and a center for cultural and educational activities through the creation of the Diocese of Nekresi. The era of prosperity continued until the 19th century, leaving its bright mark on the history of the region.

One of the most interesting legends associated with Nekresi concerns its role during the invasion of the Muslim Tatars. The inhabitants of the monastery, finding themselves under siege, used an unusual method of defense - with the help of pigs. The Tatars, hating these animals, left the area when they saw Georgian pigs attacking them. This custom of sacrificing pigs continues here to this day, recalling the courage and ingenuity of the ancient defenders.

A visit to the Nekresi monastery complex and city ruins is not only an opportunity to plunge into the history of Georgia and its rich cultural heritage, but also to meet unique legends that are still alive in the hearts of local residents. For lovers of history, architecture and mysteries of the past, this place will be a source of inspiration and unique impressions.

Nekresi combines well with Gremi fortress (7 km) and Kvareli with its wineries. All churches and monasteries in Kakheti are listed in the Madloba catalogue.

Nekresi alongside Gremi and the other monuments of the Alazani Valley is covered in the Churches and Monasteries of Kakheti guide.

🚗 By car: about 35 km from Telavi (40-45 minutes). From Tbilisi roughly 130 km (1.5-2 hours) via the Gombori Pass. Turn off the Kvareli-Telavi road near the village of Shilda, about 7 km from Kvareli. Driving to the monastery itself is not possible: leave the car at the lower car park (41.97249, 45.76027), then walk up or take the shuttle.

🚌 By minibus: marshrutka from Tbilisi (Ortachala bus station) to Telavi, then transfer to the Telavi-Kvareli line and ask to be dropped at the Nekresi turn-off. From there it is roughly 3 km to the lower car park, then walk or shuttle to the top.

🚌 Monastery shuttle: the walk from the lower car park to the monastery gate is 1.5 km of steep ascent. A monastery minibus runs every 30-40 minutes on weekdays and much more frequently at weekends, for a small fee.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

📍 Where exactly is the monastery?

On a forested hilltop above the Alazani Valley in Kvareli Municipality, Kakheti, about 7 km west of Kvareli and 35 km from Telavi. The ancient city of Nekresi once stood below the hill; only foundations remain.

🕐 What are the opening hours and is entry free?

Entry is free. Most sources report 10:00-18:00 daily; check ahead as the hours are not yet confirmed in the card.

⛪ What is in the monastic complex?

The complex spans the 4th to 9th centuries. Highlights: a 4th-century basilica of rough-hewn stone, one of the oldest Christian structures in Georgia, containing stone sarcophagi holding the remains of Georgian princes; the 8th-century Church of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), the main church, with frescoes including a Madonna Enthroned in the apse; a 9th-century church; the Episcopal Palace with wooden balconies and sweeping valley views; a marani (wine cellar) with kvevri buried in the floor; and defensive towers. The monastery shop sells monastery wine.

🥾 Should I walk up or take the shuttle?

Both work. The uphill path is 1.5 km of steep forest trail taking 25-35 minutes. The views along the way make it worthwhile for anyone in decent shape. The shuttle is the practical option if the heat or slope feels like too much. The descent on foot is noticeably easier than the climb.

🌄 What views does the monastery offer?

From the terrace by the Episcopal Palace and its wooden balconies: a full panorama of the Alazani Valley, vineyard-covered plains, villages and the Caucasus ridgeline on the horizon. Early morning, when the valley holds a mist, is particularly photogenic.

🐷 What is the legend of the pigs?

During one of the attacks on the monastery, the monks released a herd of pigs at the gates. The assailants turned back. Pigs are therefore celebrated in Nekresi as the animals that saved it, and monks will often tell the story when showing visitors around.

👗 Is there a dress code?

The monastery is active. Women need covered shoulders, a long skirt or wrap, and a headscarf. Men need long trousers. It is easiest to dress appropriately before starting the climb.

🗺️ What can I combine with a visit?

Gremi fortress is 7 km away and pairs naturally with Nekresi. Kvareli with its Kindzmarauli winery is 7 km in the other direction. Alaverdi Monastery is about 50 km away, making a full northern Kakheti circuit possible in one day.

Standing on the hill with the valley unfurling below, it's an awe-inspiring scene that defies words. The winding journey upwards feels like a gentle prelude, setting the stage for the overwhelming serenity and sacredness that greets you. A tapestry of history and nature, it fills you with a profound sense of peace.
