The church is dedicated to Abibos of Nekresi, one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers who came to Georgia in the sixth century. Abibos was bishop of Nekresi and died a martyr, which is why he is venerated as a hieromartyr.
A caveat is needed at once: Nekresi monastery itself, with which the saint service is connected, stands elsewhere, north of Kvareli, and has no connection with this village church. Shilda lies north-east of Kvareli at the foot of the Caucasus range and counts four church buildings; this one stands apart from the main part of the village.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
