The church is dedicated to John the Baptist: the dedication is named in the title itself and the church carries no second qualifier. It stands in the built-up part of Pichkhovani, a village in the foothills of the Akhmeta municipality.
Pichkhovani lies above the Alazani plain, on the way to the Tush villages of Alvani, and belongs to the same foothill belt as neighbouring Maghraani and Zemo Alvani. Another site of the neighbourhood, the Kharchashni ghvtaeba church, stands about two kilometres away, between Pichkhovani and Zemo Alvani.
The church is active and it is usually possible to step inside. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. A stop here is easy to add to a trip into Tusheti or to a route through the foothills of the Akhmeta district: the villages here stand close together and the road between them is paved.
