The church is dedicated to the Archangel: mtavarangelozi in Georgian, the chief among angels, and such dedications are common in Kakheti. The church stands in the built-up part of Maghraani, a village in the foothills of the Akhmeta municipality.
Maghraani lies above the Alazani plain, at the foot of wooded slopes, and stretches uphill. Another site of the village, a ghvtaeba, stands four kilometres higher, closer to the forest and the climb into the mountains. Below, to the south-west, begins the road to Akhmeta and on to Telavi.
The church is active and open for much of the day, so a visit is usually possible without arranging anything in advance. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside. Both sites of Maghraani are easy to cover in one short trip, though the road to the upper one is noticeably worse.
