The Tsikhisjvari church stands in the lower part of the Maghraani area. The name is made of the words fortress and cross, and in eastern Georgia it almost always points to a church by a fortification or on the site of one.
Maghraani belongs to Akhmeta Municipality, where almost half the residents come from the mountain regions. The Gvtaeba church stands a kilometre away, and further along the slope are the Bziani and Rochkaant sakdari. Roads in the area are unpaved and the climbs turn slippery in rain.
Photography inside is best agreed with whoever looks after the church. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Leave spare time for the climb.
- In summer bring a hat, as there is almost no shade.
- It is better to leave a dog outside.
Getting there
- Leave the car at the nearest street and continue on foot.
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
