The basilica is dedicated to Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Virgin. In Georgia such a dedication is markedly rarer than one to St. George or the Virgin, and it usually reflects the patronal feast of the village itself.

Tskarostavi lies four kilometres from Sagarejo, on the Kakheti plain at the foot of the Gombori range. Neighbours are close at hand: the church of the Virgin of Ninotsminda village about two kilometres away, the place named Sveti a little further, the church of Sts Peter and Paul in Sagarejo three kilometres off.

The village is alive and close to town, easy to reach in any weather. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet inside. Mind the name: the village has a namesake in Telavi municipality, forty kilometres from here.
