First things first: there is no working church here. The church of St. George at the gate of the Tsedisi fortress survives as ruins: no services, no parish, no doors, only walls built into the remains of a stronghold.
That very combination is what makes the spot interesting: a fortress with a church at its gate is a typical scheme of Georgian defensive building, where protection and prayer stood side by side. The climb to the fortress starts from a village road south-west of Gori, and the height opens a view over the valley.
The climb is easy and the ruins are open and easy to take in, so the place suits a walk with children. You can come to them at any time of day. Treat the masonry with care: it holds on its own, without restoration.
