The church is dedicated to Saint George, the most venerated saint in Georgia. More churches bear his name than that of any other saint, and his feast day, Giorgoba, is kept twice a year, in spring and in autumn.
Marana lies in Shida Kartli, north of Gori. The village has two churches: this one and a church of the Mother of God a couple of hundred metres away. Both can be seen on one short walk, so it makes sense to come for the pair.
Count on seeing the church from outside first of all: village churches in this area are not opened every day. In the yard and inside the usual rules apply, covered shoulders and knees and quiet, and a headscarf is useful for women.
