The name of this place is a single word: Surb. In Armenian it means holy, and in the Armenian tradition every dedication begins with it; standing alone it remains simply a marker of a holy place. Neither the name of a saint nor a second word appears here.
The place lies on the Javakheti plateau between the villages of Kaurma and Eshtia, about eight kilometres from Ninotsminda. Kaurma is the nearer, some two kilometres off, Eshtia a little further. Three kilometres to the south rises the church of Jigrasheni village.
Do not look for a separate building or a fence here, the place is seen from outside. The plateau is open and windy all year, and in winter the roads drift over. Offerings left by others are not touched and nothing is carried away. In summer the climb over dry grass is easier.
