The church is dedicated to the Holy Archangels, in Armenian Surb Hreshtakapetats. The archangels Michael and Gabriel are venerated together in the Armenian tradition, and churches in their name are frequent on the Javakheti plateau.
Jigrasheni stands on the plateau seven kilometres from Ninotsminda. Another church of the village, known as Tigashen, rises about nine hundred metres away. Further north lies Kaurma, to the west Patara Gondra with an Armenian church of its own, and Akhalkalaki is about ten kilometres from the village.
The doors of the plateau Armenian churches are opened mostly for services and feasts. The building can be seen from outside, and quiet is expected in the yard. The warmer months are the better time to come; in winter the plateau lies open to the wind and the roads between villages drift with snow.
