The church of St. Mary in Karatubani is a church of the Mother of God in the residential part of a village north-west of Akhaltsikhe. It is the second working church of the area: on the eastern edge of the village, in Botsori, the church of St. Elijah works as well, with its patronal day in early August.
Two churches for one village is a generosity typical of the Akhaltsikhe hills, where the parishes hold firm, and together they make a ready half-hour route: the Mother of God in the centre, Elijah on the edge, village streets and hills between them. The road from town runs uphill, and the village opens up all at once.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way.
