The church of St. Elijah in Botsori is a working church on the eastern edge of Karatubani, north of Akhaltsikhe. The place is alive and cared for, the parish keeps it in order, and the village church of these hills looks anything but neglected: fresh whitewash, an even yard, fresh flowers by the door.
Botsori pairs well with the Mother of God church in the centre of Karatubani: two working churches of one village, ten minutes of unhurried road between them and the hilly Akhaltsikhe country all around: fields, copses and distant ridges.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service. Elijah’s Day in early August is the chief feast of this place, and the whole village gathers by the church.
