The church of St. George in Ani is a working village church on the hills north-west of Akhaltsikhe. The village bears a loud name: Ani is also the great medieval capital of the Armenian kings, but this Ani is a modest Samtskhe settlement with a quiet history of its own.
The church has a historical double: a kilometre north, beyond the village edge, the old Ani church site survives. The pair of a working church and the place of the former one turns the visit into a small journey through the village’s continuity: half an hour of walking across two ages. The road from Akhaltsikhe runs over the hills and is good in itself.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. On Giorgoba the whole village gathers by the church.
