The church in Kikineti is a village church on the hills north-west of Akhaltsikhe. The modest church lives an ordinary parish life, and a couple of kilometres to the south lies the church site of the vanished village of Churchuto: a neighbour that adds historical depth to the visit and a reason to linger longer.
Kikineti is one of those villages where a guest is welcome simply for having got there: the road runs over the hills, past fields and copses, with a view over the Akhaltsikhe basin. The link with Churchuto turns a short call into a small study of the living and the departed.
One enters freely, with ordinary rural courtesy: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for the yards. If the church is shut, a look from outside is enough, and then it is worth descending to Churchuto.
