A sajvare is a place for a cross: in Georgia the word denotes a platform or structure where a devotional cross stands. In Muskhi such a site is marked separately from the church buildings of the village.
The Ascension church in the Old Muskhi nasoplari, on the site of a deserted part of the village, is marked about a kilometre away. Muskhi lies in Akhaltsikhe Municipality, in the mountainous district south of the basin. The roads climb the slopes and some are closed in winter.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a living place of veneration. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Leave offerings only according to local custom.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
