Varkhani has two churches, and both are dedicated to the Mother of God. Such a coincidence within one village is not rare in Georgia: dedications repeat, and churches are told apart by location and by the end of the village they belong to.
This one stands about two and a half kilometres south of its namesake, closer to the lower part of the valley. The road to Abastumani, a mountain resort with pine air, runs through Varkhani, and if you have already turned off for the other church, the second is barely any further.
The village is easy to see in full in one stop. Mariamoba at the end of August is the day when Marian churches across Georgia come alive, and Varkhani is no exception. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
