The old church of Tsikhisdziri, also known as Jghuniaant Sakdari, is the family church of the Jghuniaani kin, of which ruins survive south of the main part of the village. Sakdari means a church in Georgian, and family sakdari are a special layer of Georgian tradition, where a church kept the memory of one particular family.
The ruins stand on a slope above the Zhinvali reservoir, and the visit is made of three things: the old masonry, the family history held in the very name, and the views over the water. A quiet, thoughtful stop a couple of steps from the busy Georgian Military Road. The best light on the masonry and the water comes before sunset.
The ruins are seen freely, at any time: there are no services here. The masonry needs care: no climbing on the walls and no shifting of stones.
