The small church of Avenisi, known as the Archangel basilica, is the village’s other church, on the southern edge, slightly aside from the main church. A pair of churches in one village is a common thing for Mtianeti, and in Avenisi they share the roles: the main church for services, the small basilica for quiet prayer.
The place is intimate and almost always empty: a short climb from the village road, stone walls and views over the hills above the Zhinvali reservoir. A good addition to a visit to the village’s main church with its venerated yew: the two churches fold into one short walk along the village street and the slope.
The basilica is seen freely: there are usually no regular services here. Inside and by the walls one keeps quiet, and the old masonry needs care.
