The Esoje complex of St. George is a secluded church west of Tsikhisdziri, on a nameless road amid the hills of Dusheti Municipality. There are no signposts here, and that is a filter: people arrive deliberately, for complete silence and a St. George dedication away from all the routes.
The reward for persistence: the hills of Mtianeti around, the sense of a find and a place seen by few before you. Places like this make up the hidden layer of the Tsikhisdziri area, where a few kilometres hold half a dozen churches, ruins and shrines: Esoje among them is the farthest and the quietest.
The complex is seen freely, at any time: there are no regular services here. The old walls need care, and the dirt road asks for dry weather.
