The church in Avenisi is a village church on the eastern side of the Zhinvali reservoir, loved both by the village and by the travellers who make it here. The place is alive, kept and truly warm: the case where real parish care stands behind modest walls. Inside it is simple and light, as befits a village church.
A special mark of the church is the ancient yew tree beside it. Old trees by Georgian churches are venerated on a par with the walls themselves; for centuries village gatherings and feasts were held under them, and the Avenisi yew continues this tradition of a living witness.
One enters freely, keeping the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, quiet, respect for a service. The yew is treated as part of the shrine: branches are not broken and the bark is not touched.
