The St. George shrine of Apkhavi is a small nishi on the northern edge of Tsikhisdziri. In mountain Georgia the word nishi names small village shrines: stone niches and structures where candles, offerings and vows are left.
The Apkhavi nishi is of the living kind: the place is kept, a path is trodden to it, and on the days of St. George the villagers climb here. For a traveller it is a rare chance to touch the folk layer of Georgian religious tradition that seldom makes the guidebooks, living its quiet life next to the big routes.
The shrine is treated with special tact: offerings are not touched, one keeps quiet by the place and takes photos without people in them. The climb from the village street takes a few minutes.
