The church of St. George opens the Lami cluster of shrines. In mountain Kartli George is venerated above others: most village churches carry his name, and it is to him that people turn on the days when the village gathers.
Lami lies in the mountains north of Mtskheta, away from the main roads. Within a kilometre of the church stand four more shrines: the church of St. Barbara, three places of prayer under one name, the Crow sakdari and the niche of St. Lomisa. Such density is usual in mountain villages, where each family kept a place of prayer of its own. Down the gorge lies Upureti, beyond the pass Choporti.
The road here climbs in hairpins and is harder in rain or snow, so dry days are the better choice. Dress modestly and keep quiet inside; in mountain churches offerings left by others are not touched.
