The Thomas church in Avranlo. It carries a second name too: the church is also referred to as a church of Our Lady, and which of the two dedications is the older cannot be said. The apostle Thomas is widely honoured in Georgia, and his day falls on the first Sunday after Easter.
The church stands in the western part of Avranlo, among the densest scattering of shrines in the area. The prayer place of Saint Sophia is a hundred and fifty metres away, the church of Saint Mary two hundred and seventy, and the prayer place of Saint Demetre a little further.
The western part of the village can be walked in ten minutes. The rules are the same everywhere: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf is useful for women.
