Dmanisi Sioni stands beside the town site, only four hundred metres from the church of the Kvemoubani quarter. Many Georgian churches carry the name Sioni, and this one should not be confused with the famous ones: here it points to a place rather than to a celebrated sanctuary.
Both churches belong to one archaeological cluster, the Dmanisi site, a place of excavations whose finds entered world scholarship. The modern town of Dmanisi lies about twelve kilometres away, while the nearest settlement, Patara Dmanisi, is close at hand.
The church has round the clock access and can be approached at any hour. The grounds of the site are protected, so the visiting arrangements for the complex itself are best checked locally. Closed shoes are needed: the ground underfoot is stony and uneven, and the paths between the sites are not always marked.
