The word nakalakari means the site of a former town. It refers to the Dmanisi site, while the qualifier Kvemoubani points to its lower quarter: the church stands within the archaeological complex rather than in the modern town of Dmanisi, some twelve kilometres away.
The Dmanisi site is one of the best known archaeological places in Georgia: excavations have been carried out here for a long time, and the finds from this place entered world scholarship. Besides this church, the Dmanisi Sioni stands on the site, only four hundred metres away.
The site is protected ground, so the visiting arrangements are best checked locally: they may differ from the free access of a village church. Keep to the marked paths without stepping into the excavations, and wear closed shoes: the ground underfoot is stony and uneven.
