The parish of Didi Chailuri forms a pair with that of neighbouring Patara Chailuri: didi means large in Georgian and patara means small, and the two villages sharing a root in their names lie a kilometre and a half apart.
Such pairs are ordinary in Kakheti and usually mean the smaller settlement split off from the larger one: one village grows, then some of its people leave and found a second, keeping the name. Both churches are dedicated to the Virgin, so they can only be told apart by the name of the village. The Chailuri villages lie west of Cheremi, where the road opens into the valley.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
