The church stands in the locality of Vedrebela, within the area of the village of Manavi. The building is small, set apart, with neither houses nor a fence beside it.
Manavi lies in Sagarejo Municipality at about seven hundred and fifty metres and is known for two things: a large old fortress and the Manavis Mtsvane grape. The fortress was built on a commanding hill; its lower building layer is placed in the tenth and eleventh centuries and the palace structures in the sixteenth to eighteenth. At the start of the eighteenth century it served as the residence of King David the Second of Kakheti.
Enter quietly if the door is open, and do not disturb those at prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- It is better to leave a dog outside.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
